This complex is dedicated solely to undergraduate engineering education. We renovated over 300,000 SF of the existing facility to include offices, classrooms, learning studios, design centers, engineering labs, and a coffee bar. We constructed over 200,000 SF of additions on the south and north sides of the existing building, and we added another floor and penthouse on top of the existing building. We left the MEP systems exposed for learning opportunities.
The existing building’s precast exterior didn’t align with the architect’s modern design but it had a structural element that supported each floor. To open up the space to natural light, we installed new foundations in the basement, onto which we installed new steel columns to support the floors. Then, we removed the existing precast to open the building to better lighting possibilities. We also demolished the interior core structure and created an open atrium with a new skylight.
