This facility sets a new standard for collaboration in engineering, medicine, research, and education. Level 1 provides a 243-seat auditorium, pre-function space, a maker space, demonstration and shop rooms, and simulation rooms. Classrooms and ample study spaces make up Level 2. Levels 3 and 4 include a skills lab, simulation spaces, training exam rooms, and a large testing room. Faculty office spaces on Levels 15-17 include multipurpose rooms and conference rooms. Level 17 executive space offers expansive views of the Texas Medical Center.
The university wanted a 15,000-pound steel vault door from the building’s basement salvaged for use in the main lobby. Relocating it required weeks of planning and several crane picks to execute. The first-floor deck assembly could not bear the weight of the door, even if reinforced from below, so we cantilevered steel supports off one of the structural steel columns. The newly relocated door, a vestige of the former bank, greets visitors upon entry.
