This three-story classroom building devoted to education of future teachers, included traditional classrooms, faculty and administrative offices, a maker space, an innovative design center for teachers, and three technologically advanced laboratories designed to simulate classroom environments through interaction with avatars, gaming, and other technology. The ground level provides a flexible, 200-seat multipurpose event space with folding floor to ceiling glass doors that can subdivide the space into two large 72-seat classrooms.
The building needed to match the campus’ colonial architecture. To do so, our team constructed a full-size attic to house mechanical equipment so the traditional roofline could remain unobstructed. We repurposed the ornamental dormer windows placing louvers inside them that are attached to HVAC duct work so outside air could circulate to the HVAC system. And, we installed daylight-sensored smart glass in the two-story glass enclosed porticos to maintain user comfort while preserving the colonial appearance.
