Bexar County’s University Hospital in San Antonio is the only Level One trauma center in a 22-county region. Its emergency department sees nearly 70,000 visits per year. To provide its citizens with the latest in specialized care, the hospital embarked on a significant capital improvement project that included a new 1.1 million SF patient tower, a 3,300-space parking garage, a new central plant, and renovations to the existing hospital.
This project was constructed in the middle of the San Antonio medical center, where real estate and laydown space was at a premium. To build the new 12-story Sky Tower in between the operating hospital and existing parking garage, we had to demolish part of the garage, relocate the existing hospital’s main entry, rent land nearby for laydown and staging activities, and have all materials for the project delivered just in time.
