This new classroom building provides additional space for the university’s rapidly growing School of Medicine. Located adjacent to the Medical Education Building (constructed by Vaughn in 2014), it features flexible classrooms with modern technology to support educational methods needed to train future physicians in the Rio Grande Valley region. It also includes space for faculty and administrative offices, touch-down spaces, study spaces, and general-purpose classrooms.
Though we weren’t formally involved during preconstruction, we assisted in resolution of design challenges to streamline construction. We extended the campus chilled water piping loop to serve the new building. Due to budgetary concerns, the Owner considered replacing this scope with an air-cooled chiller. Working with the mechanical engineer, we identified a cheaper piping alternative, pre-insulated high-density polyethylene (HDPE) piping, a first for the campus. The HDPE piping is more durable and saved the project over $200,000.
