The hospital campus sustained significant damage after Hurricane Ike. To better prepare for future events, UTMB hired us to build a new elevated structure atop an existing parking garage to house three new one mega-watt generators which are synchronized by ASCO paralleling gear and hooked up to a new distribution system. We upgraded 22 automatic transfer switches associated with each building to provide critical information through a stand-alone fiber optic communications loop linked to the start-up controls of the new generators.
The generators we installed distribute emergency electrical services to life safety, critical, and equipment branch circuits throughout nine of the hospital's buildings. To ensure the hospital remained functional, we traced all electrical lines to the areas they served comparing our results to the as-built documents. Prior to power shutdowns, we installed temporary back-up power to the buildings, coordinating outages with building maintenance staff and scheduling outages during non-peak time periods.
