The project consisted of a new central plant and improvements to the infrastructure serving the revitalized RELLIS campus. The central plant includes four central chillers, six boilers, 1,200-tons of thermal storage capacity, cooling towers, three miles of hydronic piping, 15KV high voltage electrical distribution gear, and 1.5 miles of electrical and communication ductbanks. Cooling towers, transformers, and a thermal storage tank are located near the plant. The improvements include both utilities and roads.
The infrastructure project was vital to the timely start-up and completion of five new buildings on the campus. During preconstruction, the Owner chose a welded steel design for a thermal storage tank, which added about 90 days to the project. Working with the design team, we incorporated design elements that allowed the plant to run independently from the storage tank. We also split the project into two phases, both of which maintained the schedule while meeting the Owner’s needs.
