St. Joseph Regional Health Center’s Level II trauma center serves 11 counties. Its replacement emergency department houses three isolation exam rooms, two trauma rooms, 25 treatment rooms, two triage rooms, and three behavioral health treatment rooms. It also includes six ambulance bays, two rooftop helipads, a general radiology space, and a CT Scan Room. Three new elevators help improve patient flow and operational efficiency between the existing campus and the new facility.
We constructed the emergency department inches away from the fully operational critical care unit and pre-op/surgery recovery area. We created anterooms at each area to help eliminate airborne contaminants and built temporary walls to limit impact on patients. We scheduled demolition, and concrete drilling activities when patient counts were down and adjacent rooms were vacated. Despite these obstacles, we delivered the project on time.
