This is the first of several planned buildings in UH’s new medical school campus. The new Fertitta Family College of Medicine includes a state-of-the-art anatomy suite, a clinical skills lab, patient examination rooms, a simulation center, classrooms, social and study spaces, and offices. The exterior façade is comprised of basalt stone and limestone masonry, curtainwall, spandrel, and vision glass systems. Also, a new central utility plant supports building operations.
This building is located on 43 acres of previously undeveloped property, so environmental conservation was a major focus. The site was home to a pair of bald eagles, which are protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. To protect the eagles, their eaglets, and their habitat, we erected an exclusion fence at a 330-foot radius around the nesting site. We also used down lighting and noise barricades to ensure construction activities would not negatively impact the eagles’ normal routine.
