With a new six-story, 110-bed patient tower and a 1,000-space precast parking garage, the completed South Tower Expansion allows Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital to expand its ability to serve the surrounding community. The new patient tower includes an imaging center, emergency center, pharmacy, 10 surgery suites, special procedures spaces, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a 32-bed intermediate care nursing unit, a 32-bed postpartum unit, and a 32-bed surgical nursing unit. The tower connects to the new parking garage via an enclosed pedestrian skybridge.
By early 2021, the existing hospital was overwhelmed with patients due to COVID. Though we were not scheduled to complete the new patient tower until later that year, we identified a 3,500 SF area on Level 1 that we could renovate early to create additional patient holding space. Since our planned MEP equipment was not yet online, we rerouted MEP infrastructure from the existing building to serve this area. We initiated a seven-day work week and were able to complete the renovation in only 24 days.
