This project converted shell spaces on Levels Three, Four, and Five of Ben Taub Tower into clinic space including exam rooms, treatment rooms, waiting rooms, nurse stations, administrative space, staff lounges, and a first-floor registration center. We built a surgical suite including seven operating rooms, two hybrid operating rooms, a pre- and post-anesthesia care unit, a waiting room, blood bank, and central sterile processing unit. We also tied the utility plant into the Thermal Energy Corporation.
Installing underfloor MEP was challenging because many of the spaces being renovated were directly above occupied areas. We installed all Level 3 subfloor above some departments (infection control, biomed, employee health, and medical records) during normal working hours. Working with the hospital, we developed a nine-phase logistics plan to identify infection control requirements, egress pathways, and temporary partition layouts that allowed hospital staff to continue day to day work while construction progressed.
