This historic facility, originally constructed in 1954, houses the university’s religion and history departments. Renovations involved expanding and modernizing classrooms, providing collaboration spaces for students, and reorganizing faculty offices. The project involved preserving and updating the original decorative ceilings, detailed plaster columns and finishes, and stained-glass windows. The building benefits from new MEP systems, and a new elevator which provides access to the fifth and sixth floors. The addition of a prayer chapel on the top floors provides a breathtaking view of campus.
The 70-year-old facility’s low floor to ceiling heights were not designed to accommodate modern mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection (MEPFP) systems. We laser scanned each floor and used the scans to model the existing structure, and then merged the MEPFP contractors’ scope into our building model. We worked with the design team to address clashes and necessary MEPFP design changes. For example, for a portion of the basement hallway’s congested above ceiling area, we suggested running the electrical feeders under the slab instead.
