Project Overview

This science building includes classrooms, faculty and office space, and research laboratories to support biological and physical sciences. The south wing contains teaching and administration space while the north wing is research laboratories. The project included two mechanical penthouses, one for each of the respective wings below. The building provides flexible, technology-driven instructional space and collaboration spaces adaptable to future learning methodologies. The building’s technology supports distance learning for UTRGV’s Brownsville campus.

Unique Challenge

We needed to add a chilled water cross connect in a very congested portion of campus. After reviewing and comparing the existing utility drawings to the known utility locations, we discovered the maps were inaccurate. Prior to commencing work, we hydro-excavated the area around the cross connect to accurately locate all utilities. This approach allowed the mechanical contractor to accurately price and prefabricate the piping, with no added cost or delays to the project.
