Project Overview

The facility functioned as the next step in MD Anderson Cancer Center’s strategic initiative to take cancer treatment to the patients. It includes dedicated spaces for radiation therapy, a women’s center featuring mammography and ultrasound services, a retail appearance center for selecting breast prosthetics, a pharmacy, lab, imaging center, retail dining facility, and support spaces for community meetings and educational events. Each unique area in this three-story building boasts warm and welcoming designs to emphasize a more personal cancer care.

Unique Challenge

The exterior precast skin required structural embeds. We modeled the embed locations for the concrete structure. We also suggested embeds in the panels instead of drilling holes in the precast. We coordinated with the steel and precast manufacturers to obtain the most precise embed locations, which we then included in our model, to ensure proper alignment. Our self-perform concrete team used the model throughout the process to ensure the embeds aligned with the structure. Using embeds on the precast eliminated 30 percent of the exterior steel originally planned.
