The 141,000 SF UT Health RGV Cancer and Surgery Center delivers integrated oncology, imaging, infusion, orthopedics, and rehabilitation services under one roof. The hospital fosters collaboration between scientists and clinicians, expands access to underserved specialties, and supports research. With amenities like a café, conference rooms, and a healing terrace, the center eliminates the need to travel to Houston for care, bringing life-saving, state-of-the-art treatment to the Rio Grande Valley.
We faced several challenges with the air handling unit (AHU) submittal, requiring four revisions to resolve design gaps related to testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB). After securing final approvals, we learned that variable frequency drives, essential for HVAC applications, had a 70-week lead time. To avoid major delays, we recommended switching to a different manufacturer, which offered a significantly shorter lead time of 8–10 weeks. Although the change added additional costs, it accelerated procurement for the drives and related equipment, keeping the project on schedule.
