Status: Completed
The San Antonio State Hospital (SASH) provides long-term and short-term residential and crisis treatment for behavioral health issues. The two-story facility includes 300 beds for mental health patients, support spaces for patient learning and therapy, administrative and clinical support spaces, warehouse storage, a kitchen, a half-court gymnasium, a chapel, and a pharmacy. The building also includes an open-air courtyard to let in natural light and allow patients to go outside.
The project commenced during COVID-related disruptions, throwing a wrench into our usually smooth procurement process. Acquiring essential exterior materials like wall and roofing insulation, ceramic-coated brick, and hollow metal frames became a significant hurdle for the project team. We implemented a split bid package to overcome the obstacles and expedite construction. By staggering the bid packages, we ensured each phase could progress independently while minimizing disruption to ongoing construction.
