The building features a shared prep core so multiple classes can be taught at once. The labs contain specialized equipment for multiple levels of undergraduate chemistry studies, including gas chromatography, benchtop nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry, and infrared spectrometry. On the first two floors of the building, eight interdisciplinary art labs are available for traditional painting, drawing, and woodworking.
Since accidents and spills can happen within an undergraduate teaching lab, we worked closely with the design team to limit the amount of acid waste sanitary piping required for the building. Our team combined the typical sanitary and acid waste system to reduce costs. We provided acid-resistant piping at all the p-traps in the general chemistry labs and kept traps and branch lines only as acid-resistant piping in the organic chemistry labs.
