The new 144-bed hospital in South Texas Medical Center expands UT Health San Antonio's capacity for advanced cancer care and other specialties. The hospital offers a more convenient and accessible option for South Texas patients to receive specialized care closer to home. The exterior façade incorporates innovative shading elements to optimize energy efficiency and reduce heat gain. A pedestrian bridge connects the new facility to the existing campus, enhancing connectivity and accessibility for patients and staff.
The bridge crossing Floyd Curl Dr, a busy city street in the medical center, was challenging due to the overall size of the bridge and the existing site logistics. The bridge could not be prefabricated onsite because its large sections were both too big to transport and impossible to assemble with the available crane space. This required us to utilize a company that relocates houses to safely transport the bridge sections from their onsite prefab locations to the final lift point location.
