We updated an outdated dining hall by replacing the MEP, infrastructure systems, architectural features, and windows. We also made site improvements at the southeast and north entrances, and added a second floor clerastory. The new center provides better organized cold storage, prep and serving areas, as well as room for a new campus catering kitchen with related support spaces. Jones Dining Center now seats 776 and is home to three national chain dining vendors.
The structural drawings indicated open-web joists in the ceilings, which the design team planned to use to conceal the mechanical infrastructure. However, early investigation revealed cross-bracing not shown on the drawings. We laser scanned the space, confirmed the joist layout and spacing, and supplied the design team with accurate dimensions to correct their structural model and coordinate MEPF. The final design model was well coordinated and resulted in shortening the schedule by three weeks.
