Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) recently
commemorated a new chapter in behavioral healthcare with the grand opening of
San Antonio State Hospital. The state-of-the-art, 500,000 SF inpatient
psychiatric facility replaces the original hospital, which served the community
since 1892. Vaughn served as construction manager-at-risk for the project.
Texas Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner
Cecile Erwin Young expressed enthusiasm for the improved care environment. “We are
excited to offer our San Antonio State Hospital patients care in a
state-of-the-art building that will help facilitate their recovery. Thank you
to those who invested in our state hospitals so that we can give our patients
the help they need.”
The three-story, 300-bed hospital goes beyond basic care,
offering a comprehensive range of therapeutic, recreational, and social
experiences to prepare patients for reintegration into society. Amenities
include a music room, beauty salon, canteen, library, gymnasium, greenhouse,
chapel, and a teaching kitchen, all designed to equip patients with practical
skills for independent living.
“Over 700 employees will benefit from a more modern work
environment, allowing for smoother and more efficient patient care,” said the Vaughn
project manager. “The new hospital fosters a positive healing environment,
ensuring continued access to essential mental health services and improved
patient outcomes. Attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony and contributing to
such a beneficial project for both the Owner and the community was truly
rewarding. We are proud to have played a role in this important initiative.”
