MD Anderson Cancer Center Breaks Ground on New Research Facility

MD Anderson Cancer Center recently broke ground on a seven-story research facility, for which Vaughn serves as construction manager-at-risk. The 600,000 SF South Campus Research Building 5 (SCRB 5) will be equipped with cutting-edge technology and advanced facilities to support groundbreaking research in the oncology field.

“The construction of our visionary new research building marks the beginning of our next chapter in Making Cancer History,” said Peter WT Pisters, M.D., president of MD Anderson. “With input from hundreds of MD Anderson teammates, we have carefully designed this building and our research campus to foster collaboration, to stimulate creativity and to fuel breakthroughs that will improve the lives of patients here and around the globe.”

The building will include advanced imaging suites, laboratory space, vivarium space, a translational research center, and support spaces. Vaughn’s scope of work also includes building out four floors of the new building and completing site development work, including utility infrastructure installation and construction of the exterior shell and core. Public spaces will include a restaurant, a conference center, and various lecture environments. Collaboration is woven into all areas, with places for scheduled discussions and unplanned exchanges throughout the building.

“We are looking forward to partnering once again with MD Anderson on another innovative research facility,” said a Vaughn project manager. “Vaughn has a long-standing relationship with MD Anderson, and our project team is excited to get started and further their mission of making cancer history.”

The project is slated to reach substantial completion in July 2027.
