We are excited to announce that the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio)’s new Multispecialty and Research Hospital (Inpatient Facility) recently reached its highest peak. The Inpatient Facility, for which Vaughn Construction is serving as the construction manager-at-risk, will help support advances in research and clinical care for the San Antonio area and for all of Texas.
UT Health San Antonio leaders gathered alongside prominent members of the community and over 500 workers to celebrate the topping out milestone. Attendees marked the occasion by signing a special beam, which will be installed in the new hospital. Among the attendees were William L. Henrich, president of UT Health San Antonio, and Michael Vaughn, COO of Vaughn Construction. When asked for his thoughts on the project, one Vaughn project manager in attendance shared, “[The Inpatient Facility] is a significant project for UT Health San Antonio, as it will be its first hospital. This project is also significant to our community because it will provide acute care treatment focused on oncology, but also with the benefits of research and clinical trials. This will allow UT Health to provide options you simply can’t get in other facilities in San Antonio.”
UT Health San Antonio’s main goal for this project is to address the unique healthcare needs of the San Antonio area, which sees higher rates of cancer, diabetes, and dementia. The Inpatient Facility, which Henrich called a “state-of-the-art center for healing and discovery,” will be the first of its kind in the region. To support an integrated and cohesive patient experience, the 8-story, 144-bed hospital consolidates complementary inpatient services. Hospital departments are even arranged to minimize travel distances for patients. The hospital will include spaces and equipment dedicated to cancer services, neurosciences, orthopedics, urology, thoracic surgery, and bariatrics. Additionally, a 650-space parking garage will support the Inpatient Facility, which is slated to open in 2024.
The Inpatient Facility will serve the healthcare needs of the San Antonio area for years to come, and Vaughn is excited to continue supporting UT Health San Antonio’s mission on this project. The same Vaughn project manager said, “Many of us working on this building will have family and friends treated here in the future, so I can’t think of a more meaningful project to be a part of. It’s an honor to be able to work on this project with UT Health San Antonio.”
